University is one of those things that are both equally good and bad. You get a degree but if you get student finance, you’re in £45,000+ worth of debt for 30 years. There are many pros and cons of attending University and I know some people who are on the fence about going. I thought today’s post would be why I chose to go to Uni!
The main thing that I am going to University for is my degree in Film Production. Although you don’t really need one to get into the film industry, it is good to have one. For some courses, you need a degree to get into that industry so I think the debt is worth it if it means you get to use your degree for your job.
If you have a degree, you are more likely to get jobs even if it’s not in that industry you took your degree in. Anyone with a degree shows a level of dedication to studying and shows you have spent a lot of money to get the degree.
I was told I shouldn’t go to Uni and should apply for internships and other things because I wouldn’t get in. I didn’t just apply to Uni because I wanted to be a Filmmaker, I wanted the experience of going to Uni and to show the people who told me I couldn’t get in that I could and I could pass.
I must say Uni is the best place to start again, make new friends and re-discover yourself. I came to Uni as a different person to who I am now. I loved who I was then but now, I am so much happier with who I have become.
I use to love studying and I still do love learning but I didn’t just want to stop after 6th Form, I wanted to learn more about the film industry and other filming techniques. I wanted to learn all about the theory side of film even though I hated it. I didn’t want to stop studying even though it would cost me a lot of money.
I didn’t want to go from 6th Form to a job. I didn’t want to try anything except go to Uni and expand my knowledge of what I wanted to do in life.
Expanding My Skills
I didn’t just come to learn about German Expressionism Film, I came to learn how to use different cameras, editing software and how I could put my skills to use and expand on them for when I leave Uni.
I’m now in my second year at Uni and I have got so much more knowledge of what I want to do and how my new skills can be applied to what I want to do!
If you’re thinking of going to Uni, write down a pro’s and con’s list and see where it takes you. I do recommend coming to Uni but you have to come for the right reasons!
I hope today’s little post gave you insight on why I chose to come to Uni!
